US women's soccer team regains top ranking
The U.S. women's soccer team regained the top spot in the FIFA rankings with its victory in this month's Algarve Cup. The Americans moved ahead of Germany, which had been ranked No. 1 since winning the Women's World Cup last year. Sweden remained third in the quarterly rankings released Friday, followed by Brazil, Norway, North Korea, France, Denmark, Canada and Japan.

Abby Wambach scored her 88th international goal Wednesday to help the United States win the Algarve Cup for a record sixth time with a 2-1 victory over Denmark. Wambach scored the winning goal in the 49th minute, sprinting down the right flank and breaking two tackles before exchanging passes with Natasha Kai and sending a low drive into the corner.


United States, Denmark reach final of Algarve Cup

The United States scored four second-half goals, beating Norway 4-0 Monday in the Algarve Cup and setting up a showdown with Denmark in a rematch of last year's final. A mistake by Norwegian goalkeeper Ingrid Hjelmseth allowed Natasha Kai to break the deadlock in the 55th. Hjelmseth placed the ball on the ground after an American attack and Kai kicked it into the goal.


United States beats China 4-0, Germany loses to Denmark 1-0 at Algarve Cup

The United States routed China 4-0 Wednesday at the Algarve Cup, and Denmark upset Women's World Cup champion Germany 1-0 on the opening day of the tournament. The five-time champion Americans got goals from Lindsay Tarpley, Tobin Heath, Abby Wambach and Carli Lloyd in Group B. "I'm very happy with the way we played," United States coach Pia Sundhage said.

Landon Donovan became the U.S. career scoring leader Friday, one month after scoring the goal that broke a tie with Eric Wynalda. United States announces Algarve Cup roster
Abby Wambach, Carli Lloyd, Angela Hucles and Shannon Boxx top the 20-player U.S. women's roster for the Algarve Cup in March in Portugal, a year after helping the Americans win the tournament for the fifth time. Last year in the final, Lloyd and Kristine Lilly scored goals in the Americans' 2-0 victory over Denmark.
