Neuer, a local boy, joined Schalke's ranks in preschool days and many hometown fans were disappointed with his decision to leave.

Speculation about Manuel Neuer's move away from Schalke 04 will feel like a slap in the face for many of the German club's fans, but on Sunday the goalkeeper was the one turning the other cheek.

Schalke routed second-division side Duisburg 5-0 in the German Cup final on Saturday to claim the trophy for the fifth time. Julian Draxler scored a spectacular opener in the 18th minute, before goals in each half from Dutch striker Klaas Jan Huntelaar, and one each from Benedikt Hoewedes and Jose Manuel Jurado consigned Duisburg to its fourth cup final loss.

Duisburg advanced to the German Cup final after holding on with 10 men to beat Energie Cottbus 2-1 in a match between two second-division teams on Tuesday. Stefan Maierhofer put Duisburg ahead in the 24th minute, and captain Srdjan Baljak doubled the lead in the 54th. Duisburg defender Bruno Soares was sent off in the 77th for a foul in the penalty area.
