Neymar voted best player in Brazilian league

The Albert Einstein hospital said in a statement that Socrates died of septic shock on Sunday.  He was 57.  Socrates was mostly known for captaining Brazil at the 1982 World Cup, regarded by many as the best team ever not to win football's showcase tournament.

Santos striker Neymar has been voted the best player of the year in the Brazilian league. The 19-year-old Neymar scored 13 goals in 21 matches to win the award late Monday, beating Vasco da Gama defender Dede and Corinthians striker Liedson. Neymar played sparingly because Santos was focused on the Copa Libertadores early in the year.

Lebanon pulled off an astonishing 2-1 win over South Korea in the Asian qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday. Ali al Saadi gave Lebanon a shock 1-0 lead in the fifth minute but then canceled out his earlier effort by conceding a penalty that was converted by South Korea's Koo Ja Cheol in the 20th.

Lebanon conceded a late own goal to draw 2-2 with Kuwait in third-round Asian qualifying for the 2014 World Cup on Tuesday. Lebanon started well when Hassan Maatouk scored after 15 minutes at the Sports City Stadium only for Kuwait's Musaed Neda to level in the 50th minute. The hosts took the lead again in the 86th after being awarded a penalty, which Maatouk converted for his second goal.


Cagliari takes the early lead in Serie A
Cagliari took the early lead in Serie A with a 2-1 win over newly promoted Novara on Saturday. Brazilian forward Thiago Ribeiro gave Cagliari the lead with a header in the 38th minute and Argentine forward Joaquin Larrivey doubled the lead in the 86th with a deflection off a shot from captain Daniele Conti.
