Under-23 side are out after a dismal draw
CARLY WEINBERG and SAPA - SOUTH Africa?s under-23 soccer team were playing only for pride against Botswana in the Eight-Nations Tournament at Eldorado Park yesterday. And they didn?t manage to salvage much of it. Having already failed to qualify for the knockout stage of the competition, the team that will represent South Africa at next year?s Beijing Olympics put on a rather dismal performance to earn themselves a goalless draw. One player who did stand out for the South Africans was Pretoria University?s George Maluleke. He was unlucky not to have been awarded a penalty at the end of the first half. The second half began as controversially as the first half ended, with the referee deciding to award Botswana a spot-kick for a foul in the box. Sembowa Tebogo missed the target and the match ended scoreless. South Africa failed to win any of their group matches and as a result the semifinals will get under way this week without the hosts being involved. Botswana, Ghana, Cameroon and Lesotho will battle it out for the remainder of the tournament. Yesterday, Cameroon beat China 3-1 to secure a place in the next stage of the tournament. Christian Bekamenga scored twice for the Olympic Lions and Leonard Kwelike netted once. Tian Ning scored for the dispirited Chinese. Both teams had a chance of going through ? if they won ? and Cameroon showed their intentions when Bekamenga put the Africans in the lead. China equalised soon after. After the break, Cameroon stormed the China defence and won a penalty. Bekamenga stepped up to put his team in the lead. Kwelike put the final nail in the Chinese coffin with a late strike.
