Kazakhstan was held to a 1-1 draw at home by Syria in an evenly contested friendly on Wednesday. Iraq in talks to hire Zico as national coach

Iraqi sports officials say they are in talks with former Brazilian star Zico to coach the national team. The head of the Iraqi Football Association, Najeh Hamoud, said Friday that negotiations on contract terms will start as soon as Zico comes to Baghdad. Zico, who has coached Japan's national team, would replace German coach Wolfgang Sidka.

Kuwait won the Gulf Cup on Sunday, beating Saudi Arabia 1-0 in extra time. Striker Waleed Aly scored in the 95th minute to give Kuwait its record 10th Gulf Cup title. Saudi Arabia, which was looking for its fourth Gulf Cup crown, pushed in search of an equalizer but was unable to find the net. The eight-nation Gulf Cup 2010 was played amid heavy security and threats of violence from al-Qaida.

Kuwait, Saudi Arabia reach Gulf Cup final

Kuwait beat Iraq in a penalty shootout and Saudi Arabia edged United Arab Emirates 1-0 to reach the Gulf Cup final on Thursday. The final is on Sunday. Kuwait topped Iraq 5-4 on penalties after they drew 2-2 after extra time. Iraq midfielder Qusai Muneer sent his penalty kick over the crossbar to put Kuwait through to the final.

The president of the Iraqi Football Association says officials have postponed the FIFA-sanctioned presidential elections in Irbil as there were not enough members present for the vote. Hussein Saeed said most federation members had refused to travel to the Kurdish city and instead gathered in Baghdad on Sunday to support Shiite challenger Falah Hassan.
