Toluca beats Queretaro 2-0 in Mexico
Mario Mendez and Chilean Hector Mancilla scored either side of halftime as reigning champion Toluca defeated Queretaro 2-0 for its second consecutive win Sunday in the sixth round of the Mexican Apertura football championship. Also Sunday, America could only muster a 1-1 home draw with Necaxa and Puebla rallied for a 3-1 win over Pachuca.
Toluca overwhelms Olimpia 4-0
Argentine forward Juan Cuevas scored two goals in the first 10 minutes to lead defending Mexican champion Toluca to a 4-0 victory over Honduran club Olimpia in Group D of the CONCACAF Champions League on Thursday. Hector Mancilla of Chile made it 3-0 in the 63rd minute and an own-goal by Jose Arevalo in the 85th capped the scoring.
Flamengo extends midfielder Maldonado's contract
Defending Brazilian champion Flamengo has extended Chilean defensive midfielder Claudio Maldonado's contract until the end of 2012. The 30-year-old Maldonado's contract was about to expire but he reached an agreement to stay with the club for two more seasons. Maldonado said Wednesday the "support from Flamengo fans" helped him make his decision.
Miroslav Karhan returns to Slovakia squad
Midfielder Miroslav Karhan has been included in the Slovakia squad for next month's 2012 European Championship qualifiers against Macedonia and Russia. The president of South America's football confederation said Wednesday he would support changing the 2015 Copa America venue from Brazil to Chile if the nations agree on it.
