Roma, Arsenal, Shakhtar progress in Champs League

AS Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk and Arsenal became the final three teams to reach the knockout stage of the Champions League on Wednesday. Roma secured second place in Group E, behind Bayern Munich, by drawing 1-1 at Cluj. FC Basel came into the final matchday needing to beat Bayern to stand any chance of catching Roma but was thrashed 3-0 in Germany.

Franck Ribery scored twice Wednesday to help Bayern Munich beat FC Basel 3-0 in the final group match of the Champions League. Anatoliy Tymoshchuk also scored for last season's runner-up. Bayern was already assured of finishing top of Group E, winning five of its six games to finish at 15 points. AS Roma, which drew 1-1 at Cluj, also advanced to the round of 16 at 10 points.

AS Roma allowed a late equalizer but still secured a spot in the Champions League knockout round Wednesday with a 1-1 draw at Cluj. The Italian club took the lead in the 21st minute with a goal from striker Marco Borriello, who sent a low shot from 12 meters (yards) into the left side of goal past Cluj goalkeeper Eduard Stancoiu.
