Hernandez selected best player at Euro 2008
Spain's Xavi Hernandez was selected as the best player at the European Championship on Monday. The 28-year-old midfielder played in five of Spain's six games on its way to winning the title. He scored in the 3-0 semifinal win against Russia. He was chosen by nine coaches in UEFA's panel of technical experts for the three-week tournament.

Spain midfielder Xabi Alonso doesn't agree with teammates who say Germany is the favorite heading into Sunday's European Championship final. Alonso likes what he sees from his squad. Strikers Fernando Torres and Dani Guiza, and midfielder Xavi Hernandez picked Germany as the favorite because it has a much better record than Spain in major tournaments.

With a homecoming party from the European Championship already organized, Germany hopes to bring a special guest to the festivities: the winner's trophy. That will require beating Spain in Sunday's final in Vienna, and the Germans think they know how to do that, despite lavishing praise on their opponent.

Spain scored three second-half goals Thursday to beat Russia 3-0 and reach the European Championship final, giving the team a chance to shed its status as one of soccer's biggest underachievers. Xavi Hernandez, Dani Guiza and David Silva each scored to give the Spaniards a shot at their second European title when they play Germany on Sunday at Ernst Happel Stadium.


Xavi: Spain wants to make history
Spain playmaker Xavi Hernandez believes his team can repeat its group stage win over Russia by dominating possession in the European Championship semifinals. Since losing 4-1 to Spain in its Group D opener, Russia has "picked up terrible confidence" from wins over Greece, Sweden and the Netherlands, Xavi said Tuesday.
