Spain coach denies departure, remains confident

Spain coach Luis Aragones has "full confidence" his team will overcome Russia's speed and strength for a second time to secure a spot in the European Championship final. Aragones expects more attacking football in Thursday's semifinal than in Spain's previous match against Italy, which the Spaniards won 4-2 in a penalty-kicks shootout following a scoreless draw.

Russia dominated a 2-0 victory over Sweden on Wednesday night in a Group D elimination game, sending the Russians to the European Championship quarterfinals. Roman Pavlyuchenko scored in the first half and Andrei Arshavin, coming off a two-match suspension, made it 2-0 right after the break. That set up a match against the Netherlands on Saturday in Basel.

With a stunning burst in injury time, David Villa put Spain on the verge of the European Cup quarterfinals Saturday. Villa outraced two Sweden defenders to a long pass and sent it into the net for a 2-1 victory. It was his fourth goal in two games and put Spain at six points in Group D, three more than Sweden.

David Villa scored three times Tuesday in Spain's resounding 4-1 victory over Russia, a win that confirmed the Spaniards as a team to beat at the European Championship. After completing his hat trick in a steady rain, Villa saw teammate Cesc Fabregas also score. Russia's goal came from Roman Pavlyuchenko long after things were decided.
