Soccer Headlines
US advances to World Cup qualifying finals

In this Oct. 7, 2008 file photo, U.S. National soccer team's Freddy Adu kicks the ball up-field during practice in Washington.

The United States breezed into the final round of World Cup qualifying with unusual ease. DaMarcus Beasley scored a pair of first-half goals, Landon Donovan and Brian Ching padded the lead early in the second, and the Americans routed Cuba 6-1 Saturday night. Jozy Altidore and Oguchi Onyewu added goals for the United States in the final minutes as the game got sloppy and the Cubans tired.

Donovan, Hejduk highlight World Cup call-ups
It's not the first time Dane Richards received the call. But it's the first time he's been healthy enough to answer it. The second-year New York Red Bulls midfielder has been called up by Jamaica and could earn his first World Cup qualifying cap Saturday when the Reggae Boyz face Mexico at "The Office" in Kingston.
Galaxy hoping to begin new streak
The Los Angeles Galaxy snapped the longest winless streak in club history last Saturday when they defeated D.C. United 5-2 on the strength of a Landon Donovan hat trick.
United unable to rally from man down
D.C. United faced several foes at The Home Depot Center on Saturday night. Landon Donovan and David Beckham guided the league's highest-scoring team against the visitors, who even turned on themselves with poor decisions and costly mistakes.
Galaxy snap winless streak in emphatic fashion
The Los Angeles Galaxy snapped their 12-game winless streak in emphatic fashion Saturday, beating D.C. United 5-2 in front of a sellout crowd at The Home Depot Center. Landon Donovan netted a hat trick, including a pair of goals in the first half, to carry the Galaxy to the win.
Galaxy break out in win over United
Paced by a hat trick from Landon Donovan, the Los Angeles Galaxy gained a measure of revenge in another goal-fest with D.C. United, in a 5-2 victory Saturday evening at The Home Depot Center.
US offense remains a work in progress
There's no telling where the offense is going to come from with the U.S. soccer team these days. Or when. Gone are the days of the Americans counting on Brian McBride, of Landon Donovan being good for a few points, and Eddie Johnson and DaMarcus Beasley contributing their fair share. Now? The Americans are eking out 1-0 victories.
US men's soccer prepares for historic game in Cuba

U.S. men's soccer team forward Eddie Johnson prepares to run drills during practice Monday, Sept. 1, 2008 in Miami Shores, Fla. The team is preparing to play Cuba in a FIFA World Cup qualifier on Saturday in Havana, the first visit by the national team to the Communist island since 1947.

Landon Donovan took off his shirt and soaked in the South Florida sun as he walked off the field Monday, chuckling at the dozen or so college girls photographing his every move. Don't expect Donovan and the United States men's soccer team to get such a friendly reception at their next stop: The national team's first match in Cuba in 61 years.

Weary Revs play to draw with Galaxy
After a long week that involved travel across three countries, all New England needed was a goal. Two goals from Landon Donovan had canceled out Taylor Twellman's opener and the Revs wanted and needed that goal to make a difficult and punishing week feel better.
Donovan scores twice in Galaxy-Revs draw
Los Angeles picked up a vital point in its quest for a playoff berth with a 2-2 draw against New England at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. Landon Donovan scored twice for the Galaxy.
