When Chicago Fire goalkeeper Jon Busch entered the locker room after Saturday's game, he had a message for his teammates. Even though the Columbus Crew increased their lead in the Eastern Conference, expanded their advantage for the Supporters' Shield and are on the cusp of clinching a playoff berth for the first time since 2004, coach Sigi Schmid knows his club's 4-0 win against New England is not what it appears to be.

US tops Cuba 1-0 in 1st trip to island in 61 years

US soccer team players attend training in Havana, Friday, Sept. 5, 2008. The US will face Cuba on Sept. 6 in a World Cup 2010 qualifying match in Havana.

Clint Dempsey scored late in the second half and the United States held on to beat Cuba 1-0 in a sloppy and low-energy World Cup qualifier Saturday night, their first match on the communist-run island since 1947. Half of the lights at rain-soaked Pedro Marrero Stadium went out in the 86th minute, causing a brief delay before the final minutes, when which Cuba nearly tied it after a free kick.

Mexico beats Jamaica 3-0 qualifier
Mexico sailed to an easy 3-0 victory over Jamaica on Saturday to take the lead in Group B of CONCACAF regional qualifying play for the 2010 World Cup. European powers look flat in 1st qualifiers
Unconvincing wins for Italy, England, Spain and Portugal were all overshadowed Saturday when France started its attempt to qualify for the 2010 World Cup with a humbling 3-1 defeat at Austria. While Italy won 2-1 at Cyprus and European Champion Spain beat Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0, France continued to show the same poor form that brought a surprise first-round exit from Euro 2008 by losing to a team...
Austria upsets France 3-1 in Cup qualifier

Austria`s Andreas Ivanschitz, right, fights for the ball with Jermey Toulalan, left, of France during their World Cup group 7 qualifying soccer match in Vienna, Austria, Saturday, Sept. 6, 2008.

France was upset by Austria 3-1 in its opening World Cup qualifier, months after Les Bleus were bounced from the European Championship without winning a game. Two first-half goals from free kicks and a penalty after the break was more than enough for Austria which took a 2-0 lead into the half and was never really threatened.
