Zimbabwe turmoil adds to World Cup challenge
Political turmoil in neighbouring Zimbabwe was adding to a long list of problems South Africa faced in its preparation for the 2010 World Cup finals, FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke said on Wednesday.
FIFA drops Port Elizabeth from Confederations Cup
The new Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth was dropped Tuesday as a site for next year's Confederations Cup because construction has fallen behind schedule. FIFA general secretary Jerome Valcke cited technical problems with the roof, but said the venue will be ready for the 2010 World Cup, where it is scheduled to host eight games, including a quarterfinal.
Guatemala beats St. Lucia 3-1
Gonzalo Romero scored two goals to lead Guatemala to a 3-1 victory over St. Lucia in World Cup qualifying Saturday night at the Memorial Coliseum. Guatemala wins the two-game series by an overall score of 9-1 and qualifies for the CONCACAF semifinals, which will begin in August. CONCACAF is the Confederation of North, Central American and Caribbean Football.
Mancini fired by Inter

Coach Roberto Mancini was fired by Internazionale of Milan on Thursday, less than two weeks after the club won its third straight Italian League title. Inter said it was upset with comments Mancini made after it lost to Liverpool in the European Champions League quarterfinals. The coach announced then he would resign at the end of the season, but he changed his mind a few days later.
