What is it with hating on referees? Wait, scratch that. But, seriously, this time in Tanzania it got completely out of hand. Things went south at a match that the Young Africans, better known to local fans as Yanga, played versus Azam in Tanzania the second weekend of March.

Tanzanian referee gets punched in the head
Certain Premier League teams are criticized for haranguing and harassing referees, but this incident from a  Tanzanian match between Young Africans (known as Yanga) and Azim puts thing in perspective. Incensed when a teammate received a red card for verbally abusing the ref, Yanga's Stephano Mwasika let his fists do the talking, landing a hefty punch on the official. Thankfully, a police officer holding a long thin stick jogged onto the pitch to calm everything down and the game was allowed to continue. Mwasika could receive a ban of up to one year for his antics, but Yanga's chairman has remained defiant and protective of his team. The club is actually attempting to lodge an appeal against the referee's "gross incompetence", claiming " he simply failed to conduct the match in a fair manner ." Video H/T: 101GG
Lille edges Sochaux 1-0 in French league
Lille got back into the title race by defeating last-place Sochaux 1-0 Wednesday to pull within six points of leader Paris Saint-Germain in the French league. Nolan Roux scored the winning goal by heading in a corner in the 76th minute. Also, Gabon forward Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang notched a hat trick to lift Saint-Etienne past Lorient 4-2, and Caen beat Auxerre 2-1.

Paris Saint-Germain needed a late equalizer to salvage a 2-2 draw with an impressive Montpellier team and keep a one-point lead over its opponent at the top of the French league on Sunday. Jeremy Menez's dribbling skills enabled PSG to level in the 88th minute, the winger dancing around Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa to set up Guillaume Hoarau for a tap-in.


Ex-China deputy soccer chief jailed for graft
The former deputy head of China's soccer association was sentenced Saturday to 101/2 years in prison as part of a crackdown on corruption and match-fixing. Yang Yimin, convicted of taking $200,000 in bribes, was one of 39 people sentenced in a single session by the court in the northeastern city of Tieliang, the official Xinhua News Agency said.

The former deputy head of China's football association has been sentenced to 10 years in prison as part of a crackdown on corruption and match-fixing. The official Xinhua News Agency said Yang Yimin was convicted of taking 1.25 million yuan ($200,000) in bribes and sentenced Saturday to 10-1/2 years in prison.
Mali beats Gabon to reach African Cup semifinals
Mali beat co-host Gabon 5-4 in a penalty-kick shootout Sunday to reach the African Cup of Nations semifinals. Gabon's hero from the group stage, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, missed his team's fourth penalty kick. Seydou Keita then scored the decisive penalty kick, allowing Mali to advance. The teams were tied 1-1 after extra time.
