His death in La Plata, Argentina, was confirmed by his former Argentine club Gimnasia y Esgrima, which did not specify a cause of death. Gago came off in the 54th minute of the 2-0 win over Uruguayan club Penarol after picking up the injury. Medical scans on Wednesday determined the Argentine midfielder would not be able to return until the end of September. |

| Striking referees in Uruguay are going back to work and will be on the pitch this weekend when the country's Apertura season opens a week late. Referees went on strike before the season started looking for higher wages, travel expenses and payment of late salaries. Terms of the settlement that was announced by the Uruguyan Football Association were not immediately clear. |

| The Uruguayan Football Association has given referees a new salary offer to try and end their strike which has delayed the start of the season. The new Apertura was postponed last weekend when referees refused to work. The Association of Football Referees was initially asking for $250 per game, up from the $150 they had been earning. |
